TEMPTATION, LUST, SIN, and then DEATH!
James 1:14-15
James 1:14-15 (NASB)
14But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is accomplished, it bring forth death.
• The Word of God here is very clear a sobering warning for us!
• Temptation, lust, sin and then DEATH! This is reality!
• Somewhere along the way we have to “own” our own deformed desires.
• When we feel the craving or desire for sin, we need to fight it and not give in!
- Let’s journey together to see how to have VICTORY and LIFE when tidal waves of temptation come at us!
James 1:14-15 (NLT)
14 Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. 15 These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.
WE ARE BAITED BY OUR OWN DESIRES
Tonight, in the book of James and in other scriptures, we are going to hear what we need to hear, and, if we’re smart, we’ll listen—and learn—and change whatever needs to be changed.
We stand to learn something tonight, for instance, that could help us pinpoint the exact spot where things keep going awry.
Some of us keep trying to protect ourselves from the devil, and we should…only to find ourselves back in the ditch. Something is not working.
This might be a new thought for some of you, but no one in existence has more to gain from our selective hearing than the devil. Don’t think for a second he’s incapable of being nice to you. If you want to stany5in bondage to self-deception, he can be your best friend. ~ Selah!
So… let’s take a courageous look inside today….. Not only is holiness at stake—authentic happiness is at stake. In God’s economy, these aren’t exclusive terms.
So… let’s read James 1:12-16
12 Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has [a]been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted [b]by God”; for God cannot be tempted [c]by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin [d]is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.
The word “blessed” in verse 12 can also be translated “happy” (in the AMP)
So… “happy” is a man who perseveres under trial…..
This “blessedness” or “happiness” anticipates a future event so thoroughly that it receives a deposit of gladness in advance!!! Think about that!!!
So here are a few facts that, if put together, could honestly save our lives.
1. Each person is tempted
• Temptation is one of the great equalizers in our world. No one escapes temptation.
• We’re all tempted—but we’re not all tempted by the same things.
• Temptation is an “each person” kind of thing; and the bait fits the fish.
Question: What is a temptation that comes at you time and time again?
You probably hardly even have to think about this. We know what our
weaknesses are—and so does the devil.
2. God Himself Doesn’t Temp Anyone
Now some of you might be asking, “Who would think that God tempts us?” Don’t most of us believe that God is holy and righteous, incapable of wrondoing and absent of darkness.? Isn’t that what Scripture says? Well, yes, but the temptation to blame God for our temptations is as ripe as the fruit on the forbidden tree.
What does Proverbs 19:3 say about temptation?
The foolishness of man ruins his way and his heart rages against the Lord.
The NLT says it this way: People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the LORD.
Have you ever blamed God for “making me this way”? Have you ever done something extraordinarily stupid, making a big mess, then gotten mad at God??
“Lord, that wasn’t me. That wasn’t even in my heart.”
Wrong!
The actions may not have been in my plan, or even in my conscious mind, but they undoubtedly sprang from something in my messed up heart.
Sounds like bad news to me—but it’s good news if it ends up setting us free!!!
3. We Are Baited By Our Own Desires
Let’s look carefully at James 1:14.
The word “lusts” or “desires” translates from the Greek epithymia. By itself, the term simply conveys a strong desire or craving.
The context determines whether it’s positive or negative.
For instance, in Luke 22:15 at the Passover
And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I
suffer;
• The wording “earnestly desired” translates the same Greek word—a strong desire or craving.
Don’t you love knowing that Jesus Christ feels strongly about His followers, and possesses a holy craving toward us?!! I like thinking He can hardly wait until we’re all there with Him!
HERE ARE THE NOTES FROM 5-15-12, PART 2:
Let’s pick up where we left off last week…..
So here are a few facts that, if put together, could honestly save our lives.
And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I
suffer;
- The wording “earnestly desired” translates the same Greek word—a strong desire or craving.
- Don’t you love knowing that Jesus Christ feels strongly about His followers, and possesses a holy craving toward us?!! I like thinking He can hardly wait until we’re all there with Him!
- Created in God’s image, He means for us to have passion for people, zeal for life, and a calling to righteous causes, but not to be eaten alive by them, we need healthy hearts.
In the negative context of James 1:14, epithymia is translated as “deformed desire.”
Doesn’t that translation just really get to you?
I can’t think of a more vivid and disturbing way to label my condition for so many years. I so often willingly reached for exactly what would burn me. I was drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I loved it, then hated myself for loving it. Then I’d hate it, but hate myself more, for choosing it!
Somewhere along the way we have to own our own deformed desire. We have to take responsibility for setting out our own bait and biting it, too. We need to recken with our sinful selves alone. Once we realize the problem was in us, and not just around us or done to us, we know Jesus is our only hope. He alone can change us from the core. He alone can seep into the dark crevices of our souls where destructiveness drives us.
James 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is accomplished,
it bring forth death.
Unsettling, isn’t it?
We feel the craving or desire, and, this time, instead of fighting it, we give way to it.
At first it is a mere thought confronting the mind, then imagination paints it in strong colors; only after that do we take pleasure in it, and the will makes a false move, and we give our assent.
According to James, this “assent” is the point of conception and soon gives birth to unabashed sin. Then we all know what happens: it grows, and grows, and grows until standing before us is a fire-breathing dragon that resembles a twisted version of our old selves. It whips us with it’s tail, hurls us further than we dreamed we’d ever go, and buries us deeper than we meant to hide. And then…the death. There’s always a death of some kind when it’s done.
My friend Donnie More says: Sin will take you further than you want to go, makes you stay longer than you want to stay, and cost more than you want to pay. And it’s true.
Sin is full grown when it becomes a fixed habit.
The “deaths” that addiction can bring are innumerable. They can kill relationships, security, self-respect, and livelihoods..and that’s just for starters.
- Make no mistake.. a tidal wave of temptation is as surely a test of our faith as a time of suffering.
- Both boil down to whether or not we are going to believe God. Each also has an antithetical progression to it. If, when we are tested, we decide to be faithful and endure, endurance will bring about it’s perfect effect. Something we’ve been missing all our lives will be completed in us, and we will mature.
- On the other hand, if we decide to distrust God and instead give way to our own deformed desires, they will conceive sin.
Deut 30:19 says: I have set before you life and death. Choose life.

NOTES FROM MONDAY 4-23-12 POWER MINIWTRY, "THE ANOINTING", part 1
LEADERHSIP CORE
POWER MINISTRY
By Jon Devlin
Lesson 1
The Anointing
- I.INTRODUCTION
“But you have an anointing from the Holy One…” (1 John 2:20)
God sent His Son into the world for the sole purpose of providing the blood sacrifice that would act as the final propitiation for the sins of all mankind throughout all time. Through Christ, God offered forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with Himself to everyone who would accept Christ as Savior and Lord. In order to tell people this good news, God raised up the Church and commissioned its members to take the message of God’s love in Christ to the ends of the world.
Now, in taking this message to the world, we often encounter opposition from Satan, from the world system under Satan’s control, and even form our own fl3esh which sometimes fights against God’s will for our lives. We also encounter countless human lives held captive by sin and by sin’s inevitable results—confusion, sickness, and demonic attack of varying degrees. The truly good news is this: God sent us to not only preach the Gospel, but He has also given us the power to heal the effects of sin as well as to overcome every kind of demonic attack.
Just as the Father anointed Jesus with the Holy Spirit without measure (John 3:34), Jesus has anointed us with that same Spirit to accomplish everything He desires for our lives.
- II.ANOINTING: BIBLICAL USAGE
- A.Non-Religious Uses
Hebrew: suk Greek: aleipho
- 1.---COSMETIC---
To make attractive
Ruth 3:3
Esther 2:12
- 2.---Medicinal---
Isaiah 6:1
Luke 10:34
Mark 6:13
- 3.Embalming
John 18:40
- B.Religious Uses
Hebrew: mashah Greek: chrio
- 1.---To set apart as holy---
- Exodus 30:26-29
- Exodus 30:30
1 Kings 1:39
- 2.---To empower for service---
1 Samual 16:13
Isaiah 61:1
Acts 1:8
- III.CHRIST: THE ANOINTED ONE
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” (Luke 4:18)
- A.The Two Sides of the Anointing
- 1.God anointed Jesus to preach the gospel to theMuch of the ministry of Jesus involved preaching or teaching the Word of God. And He did so with an authority given to Him through the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 7:28-29
- 2.---Confirmation---
Not only did Jesus teach and preach the Word, but He backed up what He said with visible demonstrations of power—people were healed, demons were cast out, and miracles over nature occurred. All of these miraculous events were signs testifying to the truthfulness of His verbal message.
Mark 2:9-12
Now proclamation and confirmation are an organic whole—they are both present in any gospel presentation. One doesn’t necessarily have to precede the other. We see this complementary nature in the ministry of Jesus. Sometimes He would sit down to teach the Word. As people listened to Him, faith began to form in their hearts and Jesus was able to minister in power to meet their varied needs. At other times, Jesus would reach out and heal a person and this demonstration of God’s power caught people’s attention and He was then able to teach the Word. It doesn’t really matter which one we start with as long as we deliver the whole package of God’s love—saving grace and delivering power.
IV THE CHURCH: HER ANOINTING
- A.The Transfer of Power
- 1.Moses and the 70Numbers 11:16-17, 24-25
- 2.Christ at HisMark 1:10-11 John 1:32-33
- 3.The Church atActs 2:1-4 Acts 1:8
The same Spirit that rested upon Moses and upon Jesus now rests on us! We have been empowered by God to preach His gospel with power. God’s Spirit in us will confirm that preaching by ministering through us in power—to heal the sick, to cast out devils, to raise the dead, and much, much more. What an awesome privilege as well as sobering responsibility we face as we minister God’s Word in God’s power.
- B.The Exercise of Power
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore…and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20
The Church is the Body of Christ, not just in a metaphysical sense, but in actuality. As such, His twofold ministry continues in us as He reaches out to lost humanity.
- 1.---Proclamation---
Acts 1:8
Luke 9:2
- 2.---Confirmation---
Luke 9:1-2
Mark 16:15-18
Now the Church has done well with the top part of this equation—that of proclamation. The Gospel of Jesus Christ has been preached around the world. Where we really come short of God’s directive is in the confirmation department. We see sporadic healing and deliverance, a word of prophecy here and there, but nowhere on the same level as Christ and His Apostles. Part of this lack is due to the materialistic mindset that pervades western culture, but a large part is also due to ignorance and unbelief. The purpose of this present lesson is to remind us again of the full range of our gospel responsibilities—we preach, but we also move in power as we preach.
NOTES FROM TUESDAY 4-24-12 "WORD UP!" GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU! Part 1
NOTES FROM "GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU, Part 1" GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU!
God never changes, yet He’s always changing something
The Promises of God are claimed by Faith...But they are obtained by Patience....
Rom 8:28, 31, 35-39
28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He Who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written, “For Your sake we are being put to death all day long; we were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.
(tell story of “more than a conqueror”…wife of prize-winning boxer)
38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Psalm 103:1-14
1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.
Isaiah 40:28-31
28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of all the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. 29 He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He increases power. 30 Though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, 31Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.
(tell story of when I needed to sleep after that night in Phoenix)
Job 42:12-13, 15-17
12 The Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning; and he had 14,000 sheep and 6,000 camels and 1,000 yoke of oxen and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He had seven sons and three daughters.
15 In all the land no women were found so fair as Job’s daughters; and their father gave them inheritance among their brothers. 16 After this, Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons and his grandsons, four generations. 17 And Job died, an old man and full of days.
GOD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU!
Psalm5:12
For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord, and surround him with favor as with a shield.
Psalm 18:28-36
28 For You light my lamp, the Lord my God illumines my darkness. 29 For by You I run upon a troop; and by my God I can leap over a wall. 30 As for the Lord, His way is blameless; the word of the Lord is tried; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. 31 For who is God but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 32 The God Who girds me with strength and makes my way blameless? 33 He makes my feet like hinds feet, and sets me upon my high places. 34 He trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 35 You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, and Your right hand upholds me; and Your gentleness makes me great. 36 You enlarge my steps under me, and my feet have not slipped.
Psalm 37:23
The steps of a man are established by the Lord, and He delights in his way.
NOTES FROM POWER MINISTRY: THE ANOINTING PART 2,

IV THE CHURCH: HER ANOINTING
A. The Transfer of Power
1. Moses and the 70 Elders Numbers 11:16-17, 24-25
2. Christ at His Baptism Mark 1:10-11 John 1:32-33
3. The Church at Pentecost Acts 2:1-4 Acts 1:8
B. The Exercise of Power
1. ---Proclamation---
Acts 1:8
Luke 9:2
2. ---Confirmation---
IV. TWO LEVELS OF THE ANOINTING
A. God’s abiding presence
One of the characteristics of God is that He is omnipresent, that He is present everywhere at the same time. In Psalm 139, David reflects upon this characteristic of God: Psalm 139:7-9
Now, we don’t always see or even sense God’s presence in a place, but He is there nonetheless and is quietly working out His will. This is what I mean by God’s abiding presence.
In the same way, we know that we have received an anointing from God that dwells within us on a permanent basis. T he Holy Spirit lives within us. His anointing is resident within us regardless of whether we feel it or not.
***The door to power ministry: active faith
When it comes to power ministry, the key to moving in God’s abiding presence or anointing is the exercise of active faith. We step out in faith, believing that God has already anointed us to move in power—even when we feel nothing. The Bible says that it is faith that pleases God, that it is faith that enables us to move mountains in the name of the Lord.
B. God’s manifest presence
Though God’s abiding presence is always with us, He nevertheless chooses upon occasion to dramatically manifest that presence. The parting of the Red Sea, the Day of Pentecost, and the raising of Lazarus from the dead are some examples. Much of what God does is behind the scenes, but He does frequently step out and physically manifest His glory and power so that there is no question left as to who is behind that manifestation.
In the same way, God’s anointing upon us occasionally breaks out and enables us to move in power in an extraordinary way. We not only sense that His anointing is present, but we actually feel that anointing working in our lives. Sometimes His presence is so strong in our midst that we wonder if our frail bodies can stand up under it. We become like those at the dedication of Solomon’s Temple who were unable to stand before the manifest power of God.
***The door to power ministry: cautious obedience
When God’s power begins to manifest in and through us, it is time to realize like Moses at the burning bush that we are on holy ground, that God is moving in our midst. When God manifests His anointing, it is usually because He has a specific objective in mind—you sometimes sense an anointing to heal a particular type of sickness or disease or an anointing go break a particular type of personal bondage. Therefore, we must be cautious in our use of that manifest anointing, doing everything we can to obey the present impulse of the Lord. Moving in the manifest anointing of God is a heady experience and if we aren’t careful we can easily become prideful and end up abusing the anointing.
VI PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF THE ANOINTING
A. How does it come?
1. In response to worship
As we draw near to God, He draws near to us
2. In response to prayer
When we petition God for something and He responds
3. In response to preaching the Word
God confirms His Word with signs following
4. In response to God’s own initiative
God sees something He wants to do and does it
B. How does the anointing manifest itself?
If we rightly understand the creative nature of our God, we also understand that He tailor-makes His response to every perceived need. Though two healings may on the outside appear identical, they were in fact two separate tailor-made responses on the part of God.
Knowing this, we must be on our toes when God’s Spirit begins to manifest God’s anointed presence in a situation. We need our discerners turned on in order to understand what is our part in this divine process. Sometimes the anointing affects the entire congregation; other times that anointing is targeting a single individual. Sometimes there is an anointing for healing, sometimes for deliverance, sometimes for a strong word of prophecy. We must simply listen to what the Spirit is saying to the Church and then obey.

C. How do we respond to the manifest anointing?
1. Proactively
We insure that we have prepared our hearts in advance to be used by God when He manifests His presence. We keep our vessels clean. We stay prayed up. We immerse ourselves in the Word. This is how we build a sensitivity to His Spirit.
2. Reactively
When the Spirit of the Lord begins to manifest the power of God, we need to stay alert, keeping our eyes and ears open. We need to move while the Lords is moving. Just like the wasters at the pool of Bethesda would begin to move when healing was present, we need to move while the power anointing of God is being made manifest.
Sometimes the anointing passes through like a wave, here one moment and then one the next. Sometimes the anointing comes as a thick cloud and God allows us to minister in power as long as that cloud remains. It’s not that God is fickle. He simply wants to keep us on our toes so that we will e dependent upon Him and not upon some mechanical understanding of His power.
VII CONCLUSION
What a wonderful life! We are saved and then filled God’s anointing to move in power on the earth—not for our own sake, but rather to bring constant glory to Him. Friends, we have an anointing that abides with us. We not only preach the gospel, but God quickens that anointing to confirm the Word with signs following. It’s time we quit offering the world just one side of the gospel, but rather we must offer the full gospel of Christ in God—one of power. Power to hear a Word from the Lord. Power to receive a miraculous healing in our bodies or a powerful deliverance from demonic oppression. Or even power to see nature turned upside down—storms stilled, mountains removed and cast into the sea, the sun stopped, and so much more.
